Anxiety Treatment

There are many Anxiety Disorders, including Agoraphobia, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Specific Phobias.  Symptoms may include a racing heart, shortness of breath, trembling, sweating, chest pain and nausea.  Sufferers may also avoid people, places or situations that make them feel anxious, which can impact their work and/or social lives.  Anxiety Disorders are usually best treated with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques such as Graduated Exposure to the feared situation, and relaxation techniques.  Other helpful treatment modalities include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness.

Anxiety
Trauma

Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Trauma can result from physical or sexual abuse, a natural disaster, a car or work accident, being attacked or sexually assaulted, witnessing someone being attacked, hurt or killed, and other experiences the person experiences as traumatic.  Symptoms may include re-experiencing symptoms such as nightmares, flashbacks or intrusive images or thoughts, physical anxiety symptoms such as the anxiety symptoms described above when faced with reminders of the traumatic event, hyper-vigilance, and avoidance of people, places, activities, thoughts and conversations that remind the person of the traumatic event.  Treatments for trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder include Eye Movement Desensitizing Reprocessing Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques such as Imaginal Exposure and relaxation exercises, and Mindfulness.  For people who have experienced long-term trauma such as childhood physical or sexual abuse, Schema Therapy may also be helpful.

Depression

Depression

Symptoms of depression may include depressed mood, loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities, difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much, changes in appetite, lack of motivation, fatigue or agitation, difficulties with concentration and memory, feelings of worthlessness, helplessness or hopelessness, and suicidal thoughts.  Treatment for Depression may include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or Schema Therapy if the depression is long-term.

Stress Management
Stress Management

Modern life can lead to feelings of stress, and our bodies produce hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol when faced with a stressful situation that we feel unable to cope with.  These hormones can lead to anxiety symptoms, muscle tension, excessive worry, irritability, tearfulness and difficulties with concentration and memory.  Treatment may include Cognitive Behavioural Stress Management, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction techniques and Relaxation Skills.
